Here’s why I adore Dan Savage, he has news that makes a difference, he pays attention.  And like that wonderful bumper sticker says ‘if you aren’t outraged you aren’t paying attention!’  This is what I learned today:  a (stupid, ignorant, idiotic) representative from Knoxville filed a bill last week that would prevent public elementary and middle schools from allowing “any instruction or materials discussing sexual orientation other than heterosexuality.”  Huh?  Are you completely insane?  Has this person got nothing else to do than work on THIS issue?  This isn’t even an issue!  How backwards and supremely moronic is this bigot-posing-as-a-human?  So what do you say, if you are a teacher, when you need to talk about…..oh let’s say Leonardo da Vinci, or Tennessee Williams, or the poetry of Lord Byron, or hell, anyone else who wasn’t strictly heterosexual.  And more to the point, what the hell difference does that factor even make???  None.  No one should care, notice, or even give a rat’s ass what your sexual persuasion is.  It’s none of their business and it obviously has NO bearing on what they publish, create, write, draw, or manufacture in any way, shape or form.  Here’s my advice to this representative (and I am using that term way loosely): pass a bill that would help children, like my nephew learn how to write legibly, pass a bill that would help children learn how to function in the actual world, pass a bill that would guarantee any and all children who wanted to could go to college without incurring a mountain of debt could actually do so, pass a bill that would pay teachers what they are worth (like around the scale of what doctor’s make, not fast food employees), pass a bill that would help kids in ANY freaking way possible, but for gawds sake pull your head out of your ass, get your mind out of other people’s bedrooms and do some damn good for a change.

  1. I found your site on technorati and read a few of your other posts. Keep up the good work. I just added your RSS feed to my Google News Reader. Looking forward to reading more from you.

  2. Tim, thank you so much. I have been writing things every day of my (long) life, but recently my brilliant middle kid showed me a way to actually get it out there in the world. For years I wrote to the local newpaper, they constantly published me, and now I am out there for everyone with internet access to see. I am thrilled that you liked what I had to say. And so grateful that someone is listening. Usually it’s just me ‘preaching to the choir’ as the saying goes. And it probably still is, but hey, ya never know, someone could accidently stumble onto one of my pro-choice, pro-gay rights rants and we could possibly make a damn difference on this polluted, broken planet. Again, thanks! Share me with friends. Be Well.
