Travel Day, the first.

There are not packed clothes, so much as the garments of three individuals strewn across two floors, upstairs, downstairs, and from every cardinal direction of this house.  With luggage near to hand, sort of like charming accessories.  Only limp, and not even close to being tasteful.  (I won’t mention the shoe bag.)

We leave in under an hour (fingers crossed).  I’ve gone for a bike ride, gathered as many plug-in cords as I can find, set out some snacking items (not all, haven’t located the To Go cooler yet), and Dan’s cleaned the car.  No panic yet, though.  And hardly any bickering.  So far so good!

There won’t be a Daily Dog this time, sorry about that.  See above mention of half-assed packing job begun.  We do have a shot from last night for you though, as promised.

Some projects.

These are needlepoint canvases from Kathy, a wonderful designer friend of mine.  I still need to set at least one of those onto stretcher bars, but it might not get done before we leave.  I can just pack up the supplies for that too if I run short of time.  (Ha!  Me and Time, how very amusing.)

Our last card before I hit the road for this trip (the first of FOUR* coming up!) is actually a stone I’ve heard, and really like.  It’s ocean colored and themed, of course I like it.

“Aquamarine  ~  moderation, energy, tolerance, gentleness, compassion, feminine, goddess.

Whether male or female, you can overcome a current conflict by reflecting upon and applying moderation, tolerance, gentleness, and compassion.  These qualities are not a weakness, rather, they are strengths.  What is called for at present is greater compassion and tolerance coupled with a little patience and gentleness.  It is possible to resolve things in an amicable way to create a positive outcome for all concerned.

As you look back on this current episode, you will realise a valuable lesson.  Compassion and tolerance are a sign of maturity and strength of character.  They are qualities that infuse all with love and light.”

I really like this definition, it goes so nicely with my New & Improved version of Me.  Also, it’s simply a very worthwhile message and something we can all apply to so many situations.

Next check in will be from afar.  See you there!

*Yes, this will be history-in-the-making for me.  I’ve NEVER gone so damn many places all in one summer.  Don’t worry, you’ll hear about each adventure as they come up.

Today’s Deck:

Crystal Oracle Cards by Toni Carmine Salerno

Our 39th Card, and A Bit About Handi-crafts.

Yes I do teach counted cross stitch and needlepoint.  I also make special orders and commission pieces.  And I have learning disabilities, dyslexia and dyscalculia (and probably border-line Asperger’s).  When I was in school it was just called “being slow.”  Why would a person take up a craft that is based on counting when that person can barely count accurately?  Excellent question.  I have no answer.  I ended up finding these hobbies quite by accident, and they just stuck.  Now I teach them.  They are basically two of the simplest stitching techniques around.  In cross stitch the pattern is printed on a graph, each square representing a little X of two crossed stitches that you place on fabric, any even-weave will do.  Needlepoint is even easier, it’s pretty much just coloring with thread (or yard).  If you have a second-hand store close by, or run across one in your daily travels, pick up a kit for the cheapest price you see.  Does not matter what the picture is because this is only a tester, you are going to get the feel only.  Pick the ones someone has already started if you find those, they cost less than a dollar usually.  Just make sure the package has directions included.  Keep the instructions, and practice the stitching, then toss the mess you stitched and google around for something you actually want to make.  There are some really good companies that have on-line stores (with great sales).  Nordic Needle, ABC, Sampler Threads, DMC, Black Bird, Mill Hill, Herrschner’s, Prairie Schooler, even Ben Franklin Crafts, and Joann Fabrics.  If I had a great local shop here I would definitely vote with my dollar and buy that way.  There are now also some amazing and intricate designs out there, people who are making charts that are way past what the kits were when I started doing this over 26 years ago.  I’ve put a couple of pictures up here of a few examples, things I have done (and are posted other places on this blog, but you’ll have to do your own poking around, I’ve already lost this post once and am running out of hours tonight).  I’ve done pieces for the kids from Mystic Stitch, Scarlet Quince, and Heaven and Earth Designs.  The symbols on their charts are all done a bit differently, have to find what works the best for you.  Sadly, right now the only way I can teach these crafts is in person.  Kind of a hands-on deal.

When I was working on The Great Wave for Hanna.
Needlepoint I stitched for Bob and Cherie, he bought the canvas because the artist is one of his favorites, I just did the fill in.

Sisters of the Seasons ~ 17 ~ cycles of growth, natural flow, divine order.

Drawing this card is a reminder that everything has a natural rhythm that obeys a higher law.  Just as the seasons magically pass, keep in mind that the nature of birth, growth, harvest, and decay cannot be altered.  Situations in our lives begin, mature, and end.  Recognizing these cycles and acknowledging this never-ending flow will assure our success.  Be mindful of which Sister greets us on our paths, for she is pointing directly at the next.

This illustration has a disconnected feeling to me, doesn’t mesh as smoothly as I would have liked.  There are four Sisters in the scene.  Winter is in the sky, surrounded by snowflakes, holding her chin in her hands.  Spring is perched on a tree limb, playing a flute.  Autumn seems to be emerging from the tree trunk, clasping her hands in front of her.  And Summer is kneeling on the ground looking up at the others, with one arm down at her side, the other across her chest.  The message, I feel, is better than the representation of it.

Moving Forward and Spinning Backwards

Okay, here’s the scoop on the upcoming (potential) turmoil….  Mercury goes retrograde on September the 6th at 9:45 a.m.  (And that’s Oregon time Ann, I don’t know the math to make it fit Connecticut time, six hours earlier maybe.  No matter what the difference is, even you Miss Wake With The Sunrise, should sleep right through it, figure it has happened before you start the day.)  As a refresher, for those just joining us, Mercury is the communication planet.  Rules Virgo and Gemini.  From life, and marriage experience, I have discovered that it really doesn’t have too horrid an effect on “hot” signs.  (Like Dan, who is a Scorpio. Or Mom, J.D., and Em, who are Aries folks.)  When this phenomenon occurs keep in mind you do NOT want to start anything (that you eventually want finished that is).  It will screw with legal documents and all types of paperwork.  Do NOT buy a phone, a computer, or any item that has any thing to do with communicating in any fashion.  Keep your head down and just trudge along until the 29th (6:14a.m. our time, probably just past midnight for out east coast friends), when it sets it self right again, and we will all be free to move about the cabin.

This just in from the North.  The LightRail has changed Hanna’s life.  She is now Ms. Big City, and zooming around Seattle as if she owned the place.  In December the ‘rail will connect all the way to the airport, so we can all just zip on up there in much comfort and ease.

One last item, to the fab Mrs. Leary.  No I am not an astrologist, merely a witch  (can’t help it, I was born this way, generationally).  I read Tarot cards, teach cross stitch and needlepoint, dabble in quilting, contract with companies and individuals to make custom stitched work, analyze dreams, talk to dead people, and generally give people pagan-themed  advice (but only if they ask for it).

Employment.

Four of five people in my immediate family are now gainfully employed, all at the same time.  If I actually get a job, it would make a complete set.  My devoted spouse was circling jobs this morning in the paper, for me.  How very subtle and helpful.  Truthfully he did find one that might not be too bad.  I will let you know what it’s like after I go see them tomorrow.  Technically I do have a job, many in fact.  I do commission work for individuals and companies who want cross stitch or needlepoint pieces; I read Tarot cards; I blog; I tend to the old folks out on The Hill; I am now also overseeing our youngest bookend boy, and daily texting his cousin.  I am awfully busy, hope this new job won’t take up too much time, but pay lots.

Welcome to the world according to me.

Believe it or not, people have paid me money to attend a class like this.  I have opinions and info on nearly everything.  Okay, so everything that I find important or pertinent to being me, and to those around me.  Topics include, but are not limited to: paganism, global climate changes, recycling, Tarot cards, moon phases, bio-fuel, abortion, parenting, police departments, teachers salaries (or lack there of), text messages, tattoos, Dan Savage, purchasing used clothes, pets, boycotting certain businesses, Cher, dream analysis, 20-somethings who have their shit together, quilting, herbal remedies and acupuncture, Volkswagens, organic foods, death by cancer, past lives, Brian Setzer, needlepoint and counted cross stitching, family obligations, urban growth boundaries, and what ever else pops into my head.
