One year can make all the difference.

Harley, Ancient Hospice Foster Dog, and wonderful friend, left us this morning at 9:15.  “If that dog was music he would be the Delta Blues” said my father when they first met.  So, with that music in our hearts, and many fond memories, we let him go.  He had a difficult start, but a loved and cherished finish.  Thank you Empress for giving him the most treasured gift of all – life that was surrounded by love – a final year that was his very best.  Good bye Sweet Harlington, you made a difference, you were amazing, you were a walking miracle, and we are all grateful for our time together.  Sylvia says that our dogs are waiting for us in the Summerland, so we will see you there.

Three things.

One ~ On yesterday’s Dan Savage blog there was a quote from Chicago Sun-Times columnist Neil Steinberg about pro-choice.  It was outstandingly good.  Worth your google time to look for it.

Duex ~ Em has gone north with the dogs.  Literally.  She arrived last night at The Horseshoe Cafe and picked up Han from work.  Now there are three dogs and two Hanavan Olsen girls in Bellingham.

Tres ~ We have more family spies than I first knew.  Not only has the sainted Auntie T found us, but Cousin Dan Dan is along for the ride as well.  Guess I’ll have to add you to the tag list.  Welcome!  I love my family so much.  Ah, lucky me.

February is still winter.

And there is more to this month than stupid damn red hearts everywhere.  I hate these make-believe holidays more every year.

Harley made a miraculous recovery, we are now calling him Benjamin Button.

Emma is officially out of the Felony Flats studio, and living fulltime in Sheldish Land.

I have completed the formerly-known-as Wedding Quilts, now to be known as His-n-Hers Couch Cozies.  They only need their binding.

J.D. is traveling north on Friday.  To see his (recently un-medicated?) sister, and to spend some time out of town.

I am still going to the swimmy/exercisey class.

Wish it was better,

but this is Harley in HIS costume.  Can you kinda see that he is a horse?

All the Kool Kids live Downtown.

Oops, don’t mean to offend anyone.  Apparently though, if you celebrate early (meaningful) birthdays in, and/or come home from the hospital at birth to, an historic house that is mere blocks from the center of downtown, it will effect where you live when you are in your 20′s.  That’s right folks, all my adult children live downtown, which makes it official, I now reside in an empty nest.  All my chicks have their own roosts, urban as they can be.  Okay, so Hanny is in Bellingham, but her nice little old house is frighteningly close to downtown Bellingham.  We all know that The Son calls the beautiful heritage Tiffany Building home (so downtown he couldn’t get closer if he lived in City Hall) and now…….. Empress is the proud renter of a studio apartment in a 103 year old domicile just one block from the (practically) downtown Washington/Jefferson Street Park.  Yes, it’s true, we’ve found her (and of course Harley, the hospice foster dog) their own little home (a special shout-out to Roger for his help, not necessarily the speediest landlord/handyman ever, but certainly one of the funniest and most accommodating).  I was afraid it would be so much sadder.  But it was a gradual process, so I am adjusting fairly well.  I miss them all, every day – my attachment to them is ridiculous.  (Fortunately they are used to this.)  They also know that should any one of them ever need to stay here in the family home (for any length of time) beds are available and they are welcomed with open arms.  Whew!  What an adventure.  The pride is overwhelming.  (I take no credit for these amazing young adults.)  My kids are awesome!

Happy Birthday Mad Hatter, wherever you are.
