A Word (or 9) Amongst Friends.

First she made me join a blog-fest, then she forced me to congratulate Megan (twice).  Now with the damn challenge.  Delia never lets up.  She just pushes and pushes, trying to make all of her buddies stretch their brains to the breaking point.  Yes, Dee, I’m talking about you.  Everyone, go to her place (her name is a link above, as well as always being a link over <—– there), and read about her latest Exercise.  We’ll wait (although most of you have already read it, or contributed to it).

Okay, for those of you NOT involved in this latest Assignment For Bettering Our Writing Selves, there was a list of words that she made into a story.  (An excellent story!)  Here are the words:  persnickety, hard, calliope, cello, quintessence, flogging, buttercup, pleasure, forlorn.  And she poked at us to see if we would do the same.  Fine.  I jotted this down.  It is a conversation, not a story, because we all know that I can’t seem to grasp the concept of PLOT.  We are listening to Lily and Shana.

S - It has another name.  A REAL name.  I just can’t remember it.

L – Shan, you can remember everything.  Start to think of something else, and it will pop back in to your head.

S – I know.  I’m the one who told you about that trick.

L- Yup.  You did.  Come on, don’t force it, that’s too hard on your brain.  Cast your mind to something pretty, like flowers.  A daffodil, or a buttercup.  A poppy even.

S – I don’t care for yellow flowers.  You know that.

L- That’s why I suggested those.  Now don’t be so persnickety, I’m trying to help you.

S – Sorry.  I do appreciate it Lil, thanks.  Let’s walk over towards the games.  That should help distract me.

L- The noise will, anyway.  Or the incessant flogging of the barkers.  Win a Honey Bear for your Sweetie!

S- Watch where you step though, cotton candy is hard to get off of shoes.  See?  Look at that, ice cream on the ground too.  Ick, this place is disgusting.

L- It is.  We should have gone to the library.  How can anybody get pleasure from this place?  It’s chaotic.

S – Oooh, chaotic.  Nice big word for a 12 year old.

L – Thank you.  I’ve been hanging around with you too long.  It’s starting to rub off.

S – So true, mon aimie. We have been best friends since we were in single digits.  Oh so long a fine time.  Hey, have you gotten through both the books I loaned you?  Big words in those.

L – I have, but the second one was awfully sad.  Gave me a wilted and forlorn feeling, like a soggy tissue.

S – Great stories can be like that.

L – Yeah.  But I like the happy ones better.  Hey!  You!  Did you see that Shanny?  What a horrible guy.  Threw his garbage right on the ground.

S – Mister!  It’s okay, us kids will clean up after you!

L – Shh, don’t call him back.  I’ll put it in the can.

S – Lil, come on, let’s go find the restrooms, we can wash your hands.  And get away from these cretins.

L – Cretins?  I like that one.

S – Thanks.  When’s your concert?  And did the new music teacher let you try the cello yet?

L – It’s not for another two weeks, and no.  I’m still a percussionist.

S – Ha!  You and the triangle, together 4 ever.  Poor you.

L – I know.  I am a very meager musician.  But hey, I’m getting to be a much better speller.

S – You are.  Oh no!  There’s a line almost out the door.

L – We can wait, your mom is never early anyway, we have time.

S – No, she never is.  Did you bring the vocab?

L – Of course.  Here, quiz me, I want to win the prize this time.  You can’t have it every week.  What’s first?

S – Quintessence.  The most perfect embodiment of…

L – I know what it means, Q-U-I

S – Calliope!

L – What!?  That’s not on the sheet.  Here, give me the paper.

S – No!  That’s what the steam organ is called!  A calliope!  I remembered!

L – I knew you would.

Precocious kids?  You bet.  But there, I met the challenge, sort of.  Now, on to the real business of the day.  I went to see Empress and Max at the dog wash this afternoon.  And got to see Jessie again.  I met her a few months ago, and thought you’d like to too.

She is the beloved companion of the owners, and right now the dog wash owners are out of town.  Jessie is very sad, so I went in to cheer her up.  She didn’t seem to notice, but I took her picture anyway.  Hang in there faithful friend, your family will be home soon.

Our card today is from that beautiful deck of Colette’s.  With a great message.  Maybe it will help Jessie feel better as well.  As a bonus, the number (combined) equals 5, one of our favorites.
