We seem to be continuing with the theme of being true to who we are today. And even though our card has another one of those unfortunate one-word descriptions the definition is powerful. Before I get there though I need to share some other Around The Burrow news and a few photos of our day.
Dan had special early Mayberry business to deal with so it was me and the girls. I can’t even begin to describe how much I enjoy afternoons like this. Hanna made us a curry chowder (which we ate over bulgur) and Emma delivered Max to our laps.
We have already established that my camera skills are lacking, so if this shot didn’t turn out very lovely, not the food’s fault, because THAT was wonderful.
All of us went to my pool class, but we couldn’t take Max. Even if he DID load himself up quickly and efficiently while the rest of us were gathering our towels and suits.
Because riding in a tote bag is so convenient for everyone. He wouldn’t understand if I tried to explain it to him, but I don’t think he’d like it inside the building anyway. (Yes, fellow quilters, I made that carry-all. You may recognize the fabrics from years ago.)
Since this message is a long one we had better get right on it. The card flipped in the upright position, but it seems as though we need to see both directions in writing.
“Owl ~ Deception
Owl medicine is symbolically associated with clairvoyance, astral projection, and magic. Owl is called Night Eagle on several medicine wheels. Traditionally, Owl sits in the East, the place of illumination. Since time immemorial, humanity has been afraid of the night, the dark, the unseen – waiting fearfully for the first crack of morning light. Conversely, night is Owl’s friend.
Owl hunts its prey at night. Not only can Owl see in the dark, it can also accurately pinpoint and identify any sound. That gives it a great advantage when seeking food. Owls are the night hunters. An Owl feather is silent. You cannot hear Owl when it flies, but its prey definitely knows when it strikes, for its beak and talons are razor sharp.
Owl is oftentimes the medicine of sorcerers and witches. If Owl is your medicine, you will be drawn to magical practices. If you have Owl medicine, these night birds will have a tendency to collect around you, even in the daytime, because they recognize a kinship with you.
Is it any wonder that in many cultures Owl is a symbol of wisdom? This is because Owl can see that which others cannot, which is the essence of true wisdom. Where others are deceived, Owl sees and knows what is there.
Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, had a companion Owl on her shoulder which revealed unseen truths to her. Owl had the ability to light up Athena’s blind side, enabling her to speak the whole truth, as opposed to only a half truth.
If Owl is your personal medicine, no can deceive you about what they are doing, no matter how they try to disguise or hide it from you. You may be a little frightening to be around, since so many people have ulterior motives which you can see right through. If you are unaware of your medicine power, you may take your keen insights and abilities for granted. Others never do. You may frighten them and reflect their blindness, for you cannot be fooled. Owl medicine people know more about an individual’s inner life than that person knows about herself or himself.
If you have pulled the Owl card, you are being asked to use your powers of keen, silent observation to intuit some life situation. Owl is befriending you and aiding you in seeing the total truth. Owl can bring you messages in the night through dreams or meditation. Pay attention to the signals and omens. The truth always brings further enlightenment.
Contrary:
If you have Owl upside-down in your cards, you have been deceived by either yourself or another. The message is to befriend the darkness inside yourself. Look deeply, and soon the bright light of dawn will illuminate you. Then ask yourself what you are in the dark about. How and by whom are you being deceived? Have you lied to yourself about someone or something? Are you being greatly deceived or slightly deceived? Owl tells you to keep an eye on your property and your loved ones.”
(How cool would it be to have an Owl hanging around, perched on your shoulder, whispering important and Magickal crap to you all the time? I’d LOVE that! And being nocturnal my own self elf, we’d be keeping the same hours.)
Didn’t we just get this card?! Funny how that happens. Also, there was another mention recently about embracing the darkness in ourselves. I think it’s all the same thing, the message of being authentic and genuine, as we talked about yesterday.
May I bring up the way I was JUST made aware of the strength in the word Enlightenment in this context? Outstanding how the dawn illuminates the sky and we are illuminated by our own Enlightening of knowledge. Lovely, simply a lovely idea. Leave our fears of the darkness behind, embrace that feature in ourselves, both from within and without, then step into the light, which is emanating from above, below, and inside. Can it GET more inspiring than that?!

LateNight Recipe Info: I know some of you are going to ask, so I’ll just tell you here. The meal we had today included curry seasonings, creamed corn and regular corn, leftover vegetables from our ’fridge (plus two potatoes we bought last night), coconut milk, garlic, and veggie broth. It can be thickened or thinned, as you like it, served as is, or on top of something else. It’s Hanny‘s own adaptation. And it’s great!
