My co-pilot jotted down foreign license plates for me today in our erranding adventures:
~California, times eight (a new personal record)
~Montana
~Iowa (this driver apparently did not read the rules upon entering Oregon, must use turn signal when turning, like every damn time please)
~Utah
~Wisconsin
~Colorado (two of ‘em)
~Washington (also two of ‘em)
~Alaska (with an illegal plate frame, had to practically climb in with them to figure out where the hell they were from)
~and Idaho.
We drove by the Farmer’s Market, which has outgrown the little strip of sidewalk where it used to be held. Having added quite a few Saturday Market type stalls, this deal is getting huge. (Co-pilot noted that our Farmer’s Market is several decades older than our Saturday Market, which is one of the oldest, and continuously running, artisans fairs in the country. He was just full of useless information today. And advice)
Our adventures took us all over the place, picking up another part for Em’s car, delivering commission work and getting paid for it, driving through the bank (said hi to Drew, who I wish one of my daughters would marry, I love this kid), buying milk (and an ice cream bar, yes even in the pouring rain), dropping off library books (and of course getting more), to name only a few. One of the things we both observed was that we ran across several extremely adorable, highly pierced, and tattooed young women. Most helpful and cheerful in their slave jobs. (We tipped well and thanked them all.)
NEWS of the day: I have said this forEVER! Not only is the massive amount of sunscreen being overused ruining our oceans, but it causes cancer! I toldja. (Karen, find that article and take it with you to Portland next time.)
OK, even though I am in a dark mood, I will not get on a rant about this….maybe.
-Julie, do you actually believe anything you read online?? or in the paper?? or in scientific studies?? Not to be rude to a blogger, but I’m just sayin’.
-My take on this is user error- idiots wearing the wrong sunscreen or not enough, tanning, and not just putting on a damn hat!
-My doc’s aren’t that interested in what causes melanoma right now- big debate on whether it is even sunburn related. They are more interested in how to get rid of it before it kills me. My experimental drug Ipi is making big news this weekend- FDA approval on the way too.
-do I still wear sunscreen? Yes or I am seriously uncomfortable with a sunburn. Is it kind of like closing the barn door after the cow is out? Yes. Do I still go to the dermatologist and get weird skin shit cut out of me? Yes, even though it’s the least of my worries.
-Does sunscreen kill the ocean’s? Some does and once again user error is to blame- put it on hours before and it won’t wash off. Wear a swim shirt and pants too.
-Julie, you and your kids have your Mom’s genes so you all probably don’t even get sunburned. And I know you don’t, ’cause you don’t go out in the sun!!
-And lastly, from my point of view, with all I have went through and have to look forward to, just put the damn sunscreen on! There is a hell of alot of other shit that is going to give you cancer and kill you. Sunscreen is the least of your worries.
Not too dark or too bad a rant:/
No Karen, not too dark nor bad. Very good points in fact. Well argued. (Did you ever debate in school? I couldn’t do it, I don’t argue well, I just get emotional and then shout. Sometimes I cry later.) Let’s address these one at a time.
~No, I only believe the things I already think are true.
~User error must be a huge factor. We are living in a world of idiots.
~Very cool about your tester stuff being okayed.
~Sunburns are horribly uncomfortable, and the really bad ones leave scars. Right, I just tend to not go outside. Moonburns aren’t nearly as bad.
~The algae bloom over coral reefs across the globe is way too real, and the research is showing that the ingredients in sun screen (slathered on by tourist divers) is the only cause. I agree, we are back to user error here, and the world’s idiots.
~True, I do have half brown genes, but Dan’s people are all White-y Mc White-ersons, so the kids only got a quarter’s worth. As adults they may be using sunscreen without telling me. We have all had sunburns, there doesn’t seem to be enough brown to combate that completely.
~True about all the other things that could be causing cancer, dropping sunscreen fairly low on the list of things to worry about. I just wanted to mention that I have never been convinced that IT wasn’t one of the main causes, and now there are other folks out there looking in to it, and seeing what I saw years ago.
(Wonderful discussion!)
